Cellular Assemblies & Niches
Cell collectives in spheroidal aggregations, arranged compartments and templated patterns in 2D, but particularly 3D are imperative building blocks for tissue engineering and regenerative medicine. Organoids are made from microspheroids and recreate tiny versions of major organ units. The size limits their use in therapy, hence efforts to generate cell collectives and assemblies that are larger and self-organise into beautifully structured macrotissues. Cellular assemblies are formative units that develop into whole tissues.
We are combining laboratory and materials fabrication techniques to construct living cellular assemblies and stem cell niches for cell and tissue engineering roles. These include stem cell factories, blood cell factories and organ compartments such as, pre-osteon units.
